TEMPLE SCLUPTURE & DECORATION
Architecture and sculputre are innex inextricably bound together - a temple gateway is not just put up , every suquare centimeter of it is intricately carved and a deminishing series of demons faces is placed above it as protection. Even then , it is not complete without a couple of stone statues to act as guardians.
The level of decorations does vary. In small or elss important temples, the sculpture maybe limited or even not existent. In other temples, particurally some of the exuberrantly detailed temples of Northern Bali, the sculpture maybe almost overwhelming in its intricacies and interests. Sometimes , a temple is built with minimal decorations, in the hope that some sculptures can be added when more money is available
Sculpture also deteriates fairly rapidly, and is restored or replaced as resources permit - it's not uncommon to see a temple with old carvings that are barely discernable, next to new work which has just been finished.
These photos were taken at "The Monkey Forest Sanctuary" in March 2009 - a cool and dense peace of jungle in Ubud. The workers (skilled temple stone carvers) are being hired to restore the Puri Dalem Agung (Temple of The Dead), for this inauspicious kelod (south) side of the town.
